Summer Term- Can One Person Make a Difference?
This term we are going to be asking ourselves the question.... Can one person make a difference? We will be focusing on the historical figure Grace Darling and all her efforts. As part of this learning we will be going on a school trip to Cleethorpes. We are going to incorporate this into our geography learning looking at comparing South Anston town to the seaside town.
In Maths we will be focusing on the following topics:
- Multiplication and division
- Fractions
- Position and direction
- Place value to 100
- Money
- Time.
As part of our English Learning we will be writing a seaside poem, an adventure story about the seaside as well as a Non-Chronological report about Grace darling and a set of instructions for some yummy ice cream cone cupcakes.
Our PE days are USUALLY Monday and Thursday but as this can change please bring your child's PE kit on a Monday and they can keep this here all week.

PE will be twice a week. Please ensure children bring PE kits to school on Mondays and take them home on Fridays, just in case we need them on other days. Your child will need an indoor and outdoor kit.
Earrings - If your child has pierced ears we please ask that you remove piercings on PE days if your child is unable to do so independently.
PE days are currently Monday and Thursday but as mentioned this may need to change from time to time.
The children will be starting a new reading challenge in Year 1 where they will be rewarded with a reading badge when they have read 15 times at home. Reading with your child for just 10 minutes a day can help children to:
• Understand the world around them.
• Develop social and emotional skills.
• Improve at school in English, science, maths and other subjects.
• Build confidence with communication.
• Strengthen their bond with you and other family members.
Please change your child's book when you have finished reading it. Our book trolley is outside our classroom on the corridor. The books are banded by colour so please take the colour written in your child's reading record. Reading Records will be checked weekly during guided reading time so please ensure they are brought to school everyday.
Recommended Reads - Your child will have the opportunity to bring home one of our recommended reads to read each week, these are books for you to read with your child to promote reading for pleasure and enjoyment. Your child will be given the opportunity to change these once a week at the designated time.
If you have any questions about how you can support your child with reading at home please don't hesitate to ask.
Dangerous words are words that don't follow the phonics/spelling rules we teach in Year 1 & 2. They are common words which appear regularly in reading books. You will find a list of these words at the back of the reading record and in the learning log to practice reading and spelling at home. Take a look at the ICT games website for some fantastic games to support spelling and phonics.

Children in Year 1 are required to take the Phonics Screening Check. This check is designed to check children's phonics decoding skills. The screening takes place in June and is administered by teachers working individually with each child for about 15 minutes each. We approach this task sensitively and work positively with the children. The children are asked to read 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Both sections contain a mixture of real words and pseudo-words (non-words). The pseudo words are included because children can’t read them using their memory or vocabulary so they have to use their phonic decoding skills. The children often complete activities in school using pseudo words so this approach is not new to them.
To support your children at home with their phonics learning please practice the spelling rules set each week on spelling shed. There are also lots of fantastic interactive games online which you can play with your child to practice. See the links below.

TT Rockstars - Now children can count in 2's, 5's and 10's and have learnt about multiplication and division they can begin practicing their times tables on TT Rockstars. Please use the passwords stuck on the back of their reading records.
Counting Games - In Year 1 children will be learning to count in different ways, here are some ways you could count at home.
Each half term your child will receive a home learning challenge linked to the topic. This will be an open ended task for you to be as creative as you like with. I can't wait to see your creations.
If you have any questions please come and ask and I will do my best to help you.
